Animan (also known as Robert Young[1]) is an American illustrator and filmmaker known for his erotic comics and pornographic short films for gay men.[2] He has produced more than two dozen animated shorts under his Animan Studios label.[3]

Biography

Animan was born in San Diego, California. When he was five years old, he stumbled upon Tijuana bibles (pornographic comics) belonging to his parents.[4] He came away from the experience "a changed boy," and as he entered his teenage years he fantasized about animating those comics with an all-male cast.[4]

At 13 years old, Animan began drawing erotic art and teaching himself animation.[2] At his urging, his parents bought him an animation kit from Disneyland as a Christmas present.[5] He initially drew on paper,[6] but switched to animation software when it became available.[2] Many of his videos draw inspiration from the visual design of the 1950s[7] and 1960s,[8] on which Animan noted in 2011:

"An inelegant feature of the U.S. 60’s was the rampant anti-gay sentiment which did a lot to spoil the decade.  I suppose that in my humble way, I’m taking modern day tolerance and superimposing it upon an idealized past image. It’s my own little way of re-working the era, rewriting history if you will."[2]

In the early 2000s, Animan released his first complete video, School Fantasy,[9] about a high school student sleeping with his coach.[10] Animan initially released videos for free, but he began selling his later films online at $7 each.[9]

Several of his films have found notable success. In 2011, he published The Twist Party,[9][11]Template:Rs? about "a 1960's twist party turning into a gay gangbang,"[9] which circulated widely on the internet. In 2011, A Day at the Beach was featured at the 2011 HUMP! film festival.[2] And in 2023, his film Axel In Harlem (2016) went viral.[3][12]Template:Rs? Queerty praised Axel In Harlem as "especially notable because it presents Black men of size as desirable, something that never happens in mainstream gay adult film."[3] Animan amassed nearly 150,000 followers on Twitter before deleting much of his content.[13][12]

In addition to producing erotic short films, Animan is a pianist and teacher.[14]

Animation Process

In a 2011 interview, he described the animation process as follows:

"I draw directly into the computer, frame by frame.  The current trend in TV animation is the “cutout puppet”, which is sort of like a flat marionette.  You draw the object only once; then you tell the computer where when and how that object should move, and it performs the task. I often use that for simple actions, such as a character raising an arm. But when my characters are having sex, I like to draw each frame of the action separately–that way I can add the little naughty touches, such as jiggly body parts!  Working in this way, it takes about 2 months of daily drawing to produce 5 or 6 minutes of screen time."[2]
