Ai no Shinsekai
Ai no Shinsekai (愛の新世界 Ai no Shinsekai) is a Japanese pink film, released on December 17, 1994.[1] The film's international premiere was at the 1995 International Film Festival Rotterdam as New Love in Tokyo[2] It is known by the alternate titles Tokyo Decadence 2 [3] and Nightlife in Tokyo [4]. The story follows the friendship between the young actress Rei, who takes a part-time job as a dominatrix, and Ayumi, who works as a call girl.
The film was inspired by photographer Nobuyoshi Araki's work and stands out as the first Japanese production to play uncensored and unfogged domestically.[5]
Plot
Rei is a young actress who works in a small theatre troupe while doing a part-time job in the city of Shibuya, but that part-time job is as a “mistress” in an SM club. Towards male visitors to the SM club, Rei is a mistress with a whip, but that is just one aspect of her job, and she is usually absorbed in rehearsing plays. One day, when Rei tries to leave the SM club in the apartment elevator to the ground floor, she meets a girl named Ayumi. Ayumi, who is dating an aspiring doctor, is hoping to save the money she earns as a call girl for her marriage fund.
Rei goes on a dinner date with her boyfriend, who she has been dating for three months, but her love for him is waning. One day, Rei invites Ayumi to have a meal at an izakaya and they talk about their romances and work. After that, they walk around various shops and play around until the morning to deepen their friendship. Later on, Rei continues to ignore her boyfriend’s voicemail messages and the two break up. Ayumi also gives up on her self-indulgent “doctor’s egg” boyfriend and breaks up with him.
For Rei, who is active in Shibuya everyday, the garden of her home apartment in a suburb of Tokyo is a soothing place where nature resets her mood. When Rei decides to write a letter to her mother, she tells her that she is proud of her work, even though she misrepresents her job as a dominatrix as work in a “part-time therapist” job. A few days later, the script of the play to be performed is finished, and Rei and the other members of the troupe are busy working to learn the lines and practice while each of them pursues their part-time job. After that, Rei and Ayumi enjoy their youth while experiencing both sourness and sweetness, and spend their fulfilling days.
One day, a first-time customer who comes to the club just out of curiosity asks her to guess what he knows about SM, and she is told to “show me a new world of love” with a condescending look. Ignited by her dominatrix’s pride, Rei shows him what the world of SM is all about and subdues the man, who has become as docile as a different person. Then Ayumi starts dating her new boyfriend, an aspiring lawyer, and Rei sends a letter to her mother again thanking her for encouraging her to take up ballet as a child. Finally, on the day of the troupe’s performance, with Ayumi in the audience, Rei performs the play that she has been working on with her friends for weeks.
